Bars, Pubs, and Taverns have been in decline for the past 30 years or so. The reasons for this are IMO the smoking bans, having worked as a bartender off and on until the early 2000’s I can tell you from first hand experience that smoking bans severely hurt the hospitality industry. I remember working in a bar in NY when they had the glass walls that separated the smoking and non smoking section no bartender or server wanted to work on the non smoking side because the people didn’t tip as much and generally were jerks whereas the people on the smoking side ordered more drinks and food were nicer to be around and tipped a whole better and the same is true for every establishment that I tended bar in. The second thing that has hurt the hospitality industry is the continual lowering of the drinking and driving alcohol percentage; basically in most states if you have one cocktail and drive with in an hour to an hour and a half you are drunk or impaired driving in the eyes of the law, combine that with so many businesses won’t higher you if you have a DUI/DWI on your drivers license makes the risk of going out with friends and having a few drinks a real show stopper. Next the price of drinks has skyrocketed for a couple of reasons; this is due in large part because the price of the rent for the bar, pub, restaurant, and tavern owners has gone through the rough and when combine that with the fact establishments can no longer use drink volume as a means to make money. Additionally the price of alcohol has gone up tremendously as well as well as the sin taxes on alcohol. Next the price of housing has skyrocketed and wages have not so people don’t have the extra cash to spend going out additional prior to COVID people in general were working longer hours and or their commute times have increased meaning less time to go out with friends and if you have kids the cost of babysitting well that has skyrocketed as well. All that said there is also the fact weed is legal to smoke in a growing number of states and stoners in general now liked to get stupidly baked and watch TV were in the 70’s or 80’s people would catch a buzz and go out on the town and have a good time. And of course every doctor and medical organization publicly is basically an abolitionist that constantly tell us how bad alcohol is for us and how we should cut back and or not drink at all. I am in my middle 50’s and still remember when having a beer or drink with lunch was perfectly acceptable now you have one your a stinking no good drunk and god forbid you get ossified on Friday or Saturday night unless you go to a medical convention where whiskey flows like honeydew vine water.
